FDM6: Assign a virus scanner to scan each ed file 4u315i

Alex » Thu Mar 19, 2020 6:29 am

Hello,

We're planning to add of this feature in the release of FDM6.

Generally, the will have to specify antivirus manually. For this, he will need to specify path to the antivirus binary file, which s command line scan, and also specify the command line arguments.

However, FDM6 will also some "known" antiviruses, so the will not have to setup all the things, but just choose it from the list instead. Currently, FDM6 s only these two: Windows Defender and Avast! Antivirus.

We would like to ask our s to tell us about yours favorite antiviruses you would like to use with FDM and write us their parameters: path to the binary and command line args.

Current observations:
Bitdefender does not command line scan, so we can't add it.
ESET Security will be added in the next update.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus will be added in the next update.
Norton will be added in the next update.
Malwarebytes does not command line scan, so we can't add it.

Hello,

I am using ESET NOD32 antivirus. As for paths to binary and command line arguments, I am not strong enough in computing to answer. I believe the necessary file is ecls.exe.

Here, however, hoping to have been useful.

Regards,

It would be better to allow defined actions based on file type, for example "scan and run (if clean)" or "convert and play".

Hello,
For FDM6 to be able to scan - it needs antivirus setup. This is this topic is for. :)

This is a waste of time as I have already explained more than once in older messages. Now I can only add that AV monitoring in background is enabled by default. If you want to run scan on demand without problems you must first exclude folders from monitoring.
And you seem to forget that many s prefer VirusTotal web service as AV scanner.

I see both sides of the issue here.

Standard AV scanning is included in Windows 10, via Defender, and by default it *is* enabled for real-time scanning. However, I also know that a lot of people refuse to trust Defender outright, and many refuse to trust is solely, so they bolster their defenses by adding third party protection.

Some of those work well with Defender - but some do not. Most of them will implement their own version of real-time scanning. Some do not (or, to be more succinct about it, real-time scanning is a 'paid' feature, only available for those who subscribe or upgrade their product).

As a tester and of Malwarebytes, for example, I have it set so that it and Defender don't cross paths often, in of excluding each others scanning engines and required secondary files for scanning - but there is a possibility that they might try to scan the same directory at any given time, particularly my s folder, since I do *NOT* exclude that folder from any real-time scanning. As I have a ed install of MB, it includes real-time scanning, and now no longer disabled Defender by default when it is installed. But those who use MB free product only don't have access to real-time scanning.

As such, I see this proposed feature as a niche use - for those that actively disable real-time scanning of installed AV solutions, whether included by the OS or 3rd party, but still want the file scanned upon . MB certainly has the ability to run an on-demand scan of any file / location / storage media you choose, as does Defender. But those of us who are more paranoid and don't disable real-time scanning on our machines will have absolutely 0 use for this proposed feature, Alex.

Not trying to be a jerk - simply stating facts mixed with my own interpretation of the usability of this proposed feature.
