Request for change in Interface 2c4l1e

Postby Mercede » Thu May 04, 2006 9:01 am

I've been using the FDM for almost a year and it gives me a lot of reasons reason for not using other managers. I am a Devloper and feel that there are certain features/ chnages that I'd request the FDM team to think about.

Interface:
However I feel that UI needs a complete redesign. The tree-detail view is now pretty old and there are other designs available. like Microsoft Outlook. The information displayed in tree is only useful when switchign the views not all the time. Rebars, CommandBars, can be used. Icons of buttons etc should be changed.

Searching:
Sometimes I wish if FDM would allow me to search for the files that I've ed from a X date to Y date. like files that were ed from Sept 9 to Oct 11.

Clearing Information:
the information for the files that have been 4-5 days ago, should be moved into archive/history area and should not be visible from with all the current s. Viewing everythign at once just makes it hard to find for a particular file.

Scheduling:
it would be nice if FDM allows scheduling of s. like this file after 9 PM when network usage is least. etc. also if it allows feature like Hibernate PC after ing.

Events & Scripting:
I have not seen any manager offer scripting. There could be sertain events for instance connecting to the site, file ed X%, file ed completely, or Server not found etc. FDM should allow advanced s to write scripts for such events. like a script that moves the file to another folder after ing it or splits teh file into many smaller files.

Automation:
If I could signal FDM using ActiveX technology for instructing it to a certain file.

A Question: do you use WTL to develop FDM? WTL creates very small footprints.

It should also allow for profiles protected with s so that on one PC different s can use the same installation without having other s seeing their s. s for differnt s should be in seperate areas. If a requests a that has already been ed by some other the FDM should simply copy that file from the other area to that 's area.

No offense, I love FDM, but something about its interface makes it stick out like a sore thumb compared to other applications.
- Stuff, like the menus, look "different" (the height of menu items are too large, separators aren't native separators), among other things.
- The options dialogs are becoming unweildy, and having separate options all over the place is making it a pain to find certain options. I'd suggest that you combine all the options and settings into one dialog, to make for much easier configuration.
- Tabs should be placed in a sunken frame of sorts...
I've included images of examples for your viewing pleasure =P

Yeah, again, sorry for bringing µTorrent up over and over, and I hope I don't give off some kind of advertising "air" about me, as it's not my intention. If you have the time and motivation to rewrite the interface, I'd suggest looking at µTorrent for design ideas. I'll suggest more changes as I find more. Thanks for reading, and keep up the good work =]

As FDM evolves the GUI need to change bu I don't se the need of a "complete redesign" to be like MS Outlook. If you like so much MS products please ask MS to launch a new line of managers.

Select Custom in the history branch. Easy to find thanks to the "tree" you dislike so much.

Options | All s | Automatically delete completed s

FDM already does that!!!

FDM already s events and scripting only makes things difficult for most s.

You can "instruct" FDM to a certain file using command line. MS ActiveX tech impl is known to be buggy and a lot a trouble both for developers and s. Please correct me if I'm wrong!!!

You state you've been using FDM for a year and the only thing I want to know is:
Are you using the same FDM version you installed a year ago? Maybe you should the lastest version and try to find those features you miss; you may be stunned by how much a FREE soft with the of the comunity like FDM changes after a year of development.
As I see you've learnt nothing in the year you've been using FDM.

I don't like non-standard interfaces too, so I agree. Preferences in FDM are really hard to use. Menu separators look strange. And so on...

But I believe lists of donwloads to be a real problem of FDM. They are updated in a wierd (and quite slow) manner which prevents them to be scrolled properly. If you begin to scroll peers list for example, you'll eventually find yourself at the beginning of the list when it decides to refresh. If there are many items in the list, refreshing it impacts computer performance. Finally, most of the lists cannot be sorted, that makes them nearly useless.

Brief, I would LOVE to see FDM interface rewritten.

Hello there,
Sorry to bug in but ill post here instead of making a new topic.

Im just wandering if FDM can make the queue option where you can automatically limit the at a time.It would be very convenient to a couple of file from a same server that only allowed 1 file at a time.
That's all.

thank you FDM.

2 palmiche. I am sorry if I am addressing the wrong person, I am rather new at this forum. From how and what you answer it seems that you are the one of developers. So, first of all I'd like to thank you for FDM, I use it constantly for already half a year, switched from Master.

The reason I answer is I want to ask you not to be so aggressive. Don't take such crytic as an offense, because despite it is still a crytic, it's a positive one. People like your software, in general, but they wish to make it even better. Unfortunately, only a very small part of people on the planet are programmers, so you're our only hope to implement. Please be more patient.

Configuration consolidation 2x274v

wuzzap » Sat Nov 17, 2007 1:53 pm

I'm not sure the look of the interface needs to be changed but a single configuration menu would be nice. Right now there are several different configuration menus and I find myself searching for the right one time and time again.

Would it be possible in the near future, for FDM to custom toolbar icons or status icons or category icons?

An idea I had...

I\'d be more than willing to design icons for this great app.

Savaden - absolutely brilliant icons! Is there any chance you could incorporate these into a skin for FDM?
